Tursiops

Today is a group of about twenty-seven individuals, but
the earliest records of this population indicate a
number of about forty individuals.
The mesh of fishing, maritime traffic and especially the
pollution are given as the main factors of this
population decline
Tursiops truncatus
– scientific name of dolphin
that inhabits the estuary of Sado
Roaz-Corvineiro
– designation given by local fishermen because of
the eating habits of the dolphin: Roaz (chewing) due
to the habit of chewing the nets of fishing;
corvineiro because it did "steal" (after chewing
the nets) one of his favorite fish - the corvina.

This is the only resident population in Portugal,
and one of the few populations- in the world-
resident in estuarine area. It is believed that the
population here has been set due to high abundance
of prey and lack of natural predators.
